Animals in Danger
Some of the planet's most precious plants and animals are in danger of disappearing, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). On November 3, the group released its yearly Red List, which names the species at greatest risk of dying out.
Of the 47,677 animals and plants investigated, 17,291 are facing extinction. Disappearing habitats are a major reason for the losses.
The Rabb's fringe-limbed tree frog is one of 1,895 amphibian species on the list. A deadly fungus threatens many amphibians.
The news isn't all bad. Some species have recovered, thanks to conservation efforts. "We know that conservation works," says Craig Hilton-Taylor of the IUCN. "Let's not wait until it's too late."
