How Disney Builds Stars
Disney's cable networks are making money when many other entertainment businesses are not. Disney wants to keep it that way by creating future teen stars.
You may not recognize Bridgit Mendler. But she's a Disney star-in-waiting. Bridgit, 16, was introduced on two Disney Channel hit shows, Jonas and Wizards of Waverly Place. Bridgit will star in her own series, Good Luck Charlie, in 2010.
Bridgit is following the same path to fame as other Disney stars, including Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. First, have the star-to-be appear on popular Disney shows so audiences will get to know her. Then give the new star her own TV show, a recording contract, a concert tour and tie-in merchandise sold in Disney stores.
With all these products, Disney makes money. "For us, TV has become a launchpad to opportunities elsewhere in the company," says Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney Channels Worldwide.
The Disney Teen Machine formula is a success. But its stars need to learn how to handle fame. So young actors must attend a Talent 101 class with a parent. "We learned how to answer questions from the media," says Bridgit. "If we have the success I hope we have with the show, everything will change."
