Hail to Liberia's New Leader

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf made history last week when she was sworn in as Africa's first elected female president. Johnson-Sirleaf, 67, took the oath of office in Liberia, a West African country that is home to 3 million people. First Lady Laura Bush and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended the inauguration.

Johnson-Sirleaf was born in Liberia but went to college in the United States. She faces many challenges as the new leader of wartorn Liberia. "It's time for us to come together to heal our nation," she said. On her first full day in office, she met with a group of tribal leaders. She stressed the importance of educating Liberia's youth. "Don't let your children go in the market; don't let them go on the farm," Johnson-Sirleaf said. "Let them go to school."
